Week 1

Updated: Sep 26, 2023

My fellow Leaguemates, I am pleased to report that the State of the League is good. Gary set his lineup in Week 1 without assistance. The defending Champion suffered a demoralizing defeat thanks to the Cowboys DST scoring 43 points! Your Commissioner survived David's Allen/Diggs/Bills D super stack. In Survivor, almost everyone made it past Week 1 except Dana, who picked Seattle. It’s one and done for the Pink Lady.

The state of the TE position was terrible. Very bad. Week 1 was not kind to anyone who drafted a TE early. Kelce was out with a bruised knee. Andrews was also out with a quad injury. Even if the drafted TE played, it was unlikely they did much. Only one drafted TE scored double-digit points, T.J. Hockenson. The rest were mediocre at best and abysmal at worst. I didn’t finish the week unscathed. Friermuth left the game with a chest injury with only one catch. Thankfully, it was for a TD. Oof.

Quarterbacks didn’t fare much better. The best was Tua, who was on Tracy’s bench. Other bench QBs who outperformed their owner’s starter were Anthony Richardson for your Commissioner, Deshaun Watson for Jordan, Brock Purdy for Gary, and Russ Wilson for Justin. The highest-scoring starter in the League was Mahomes with 23 points which is mid for him.

Between the poor TE and QB performances this week, it is no shock that there were a few teams who failed to reach 100 points. There was fierce competition for the Poopsie Award for lowest weekly score. Justin won the dubious award barely eclipsed 80 points. His opponent Paul, didn't fare much better with 86.76. A pretty piss poor showing from the Beards division.

Gary lived down to his reputation as a fantasy football player with a score of 98.44 which shockingly was enough for the win, since Travis couldn’t reach 90 points with Rodgers getting injurred 4 plays into the game. Brings back bad memories when I lost Rodgers for the season due to a knee injury.

Linda continues to be the most consistent loser in the League. It’s been a long time since she finished in the League's top half. She’s not off to a good start this year, scoring 86.38 points. Worse, her best player of the week, Aaron Jones, left with a hamstring injury. With Akers averaging 1 yard per carry, she may need to look for a trade partner to find an RB who can give her at least 10 points.

On a positive note, last year’s Crapper King posted this week’s high score riding the Tyreek Hill wave. Considering he started the week with Toney’s 1-point performance, it was impressive. I thought I had a chance for it most of the day, but Fields has failed to take the next step in performance. Mostert somehow managed to stay healthy through a game, so he also has that going for him. Maybe this is the year Steve finally makes the Championship playoffs.

It's only Week 1, but it already looks like a year of haves and have-nots with half the teams failing to score 100 points. The Broads division had 3 strong performances with Steve and Dana posting 140+ and Ashlyn taking a tough loss scoring 118+. The Bros division teams are the laggards with only one team, Jordan, scoring more than 100.

I expect the waiver wire to be very active after some surprising Week 1 performances. Using a FAAB system for waivers would be nice, but I don’t think Gary can count to 100. So, it looks like Ashlyn has the first pick, which is good since she is desperate for an RB. She lost Dobbins for the season, Penny was a healthy scratch, and Gibson fumbled again and saw limited touches. Depending on how severe Aaron Jones’ injury is, there may be hope for A.J. Dillon, who looked slow and plodding in Week 1. There are a couple of options on waivers, but I will not give her any advice. Good luck, Ashlyn.

If you are licking your wounds from this week, lift your head, for Week 2 is upon us. Always remember the example of our current Champion. You can suck during the regular season. If you can finish in the top 2 in your division and get into the Championship playoff, anything is possible.
